On Wednesday 19th June, rubbish from Rosebank School was collected for today's to sort out what could actually be recycled, reused, composted and what would end up at the landfill.  Today Room 28 went across to our school hall to watch the Eco Warriors doing Waste Wise audit.

Mrs Foster, Ron and all the Eco-warriors were there to re-organise our schools rubbish from yesterday.  Mrs Martin there also busy helping the children.  The main purpose was to reduce the amount of waste Rosebank School makes and to show how much rubbish is going to the landfill.

Matariki Week

What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Maori name for a group of seven stars known as the Pleiades star cluster. Some people think of Matariki as a mother star with six daughters, and often referred to as the Seven Sisters.

The 10 June signals the beginning of Matariki for 2013, this is the start of Maori New Year.
Matariki celebrates the diversity of life. It's a celebration of culture, language, spirit and people.  Matariki is visible to the naked eye in the pre-dawn sky after the full moon from mid to late June each year.

On Friday the 14th June Room 28 did  weaving using coloured paper to create placemats.

1.
Cut a piece of construction paper or any coloured paper into a square.
2.
Fold the square in half.

3.
Cut evenly-spaced slits starting from the folded edge and continuing up to about a half inch from the opposite edge. It may be helpful to draw vertical lines to use as guides while you cut.

4.
Open up the paper.

5.
Cut coloured paper strips. The strips should be longer than the length of your square's side.

6.
Take one paper strip and weave it horizontally across the slits, going over and under the slits.

7.
Push the woven strip to the top and start with another one. The second strip should be woven in an opposite pattern as the first. If your first paper strip goes over and under across the slits, the second strip should go under and over the slits.

8.
Weave more paper strips in an alternating pattern until your paper weave is full.

9.
Flip the whole square weave. Apply glue at the ends of each paper strip.

10.
Fold the excess length of each strip inwards and press to glue them in place.

11.
Flip the square weave again so that the folded ends are concealed at the bottom.

12.
Cut a larger piece of construction paper or craft foam to frame your paper weave. You can use a pair of craft scissors to create a more interesting border.

13.
Glue your paper weave on top of the frame. Decorate the frame with any or a combination of these materials: glitter glue, puffy paint, sequins, beads, small craft foam shapes, stickers, buttons or other decorative materials.

Fun With Tagxedo

Tagxedo turns words.  Tagxedo offers images of things like a heart, shamrock, apple, Australia, etc. You can either form the words in that shape, or invert it so that the words create a cut-out of the shape in the center.  Tagxedo  allows you to upload an image and then will create a a word cloud to correspond to the image.

With Tagxedo, you can:
  • make word clouds in real-time
  • customize font, theme, color, orientation, and shape
  • fine-tune with lots of options
  • save as images for printing and sharing
  • view your word clouds as thumbnails, and pick the one you want for further saving
  • choose from many standard fonts
  • use custom fonts
  • use images as custom shapes (e.g. a portrait)

For some reason, cauliflower most children don't like it and consider it one of those 'eat your vegetables or no dessert' vegetables because they have never recovered from a traumatic, over-boiled, under seasoned, un-colourful cousin of broccoli.  Don't get us wrong, we Room 28 are one of those kids, but we could easily prove those people otherwise.  Today Room 28 children made crispy cauliflower fries.  Early this morning after assembly we got fresh cauliflowers from our school garden.

Here is how we made crispy cauliflower fries.

Ingredients:
Cauliflower 1 medium          Pea flour 2 cups
Red chili powder 1ts            Turmeric 2-3 pinches
Salt  as needed                    Oil for deep frying

Method:
1.  Cut/separate the cauliflower into bite size pieces.  Wash and let the water drain completely.

2.  In a large bowl add pea flower and all the dry ingredients.  Mix well.

3.  Add the water in so its just like batter consistency.

4.  Add the cauliflower pieces in and mix.

5.  Deep fry your cauliflower fries till its golden brown and crisp.
Serve hot, fry only when you are going to eat or otherwise it will become soggy.

Today Room 28 learnt about the Three R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  We learnt about the recycling symbol and what it means.   The class learnt that recycling is actually the third step in reducing waste.   The three Rs: Reduce Reuse and the Recycle.   The three R's are in order of importance, so reduce is the most important step!

  • Reduce means to use less.
  • Reuse means using something as many times as you can.
  • Recycle means to dispose of certain products.

We talked about how we can recycle at home.   Discussed the recycle vocabulary words and encouraged each other to use the new words this week in class. We had to design a poster for our school to motivate children to recycle.

Learning Outcomes
  • Students will be able to identify basic vocabulary words related to recycling
  • Students will understand the advantages and the importance of recycling

Custom Glitter Text

On Wednesday 23rd of May a few students from Rosebank School went outside and harvested the community garden of Rosebank. Since the spring onions, silver beet, curly kale and some lettuce were already at the cropping stage we decided to crop it. We needed the money to get new seedlings for the garden.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us with the harvesting.

Afio mai, talofa lava.  O le gagana e tasi e le lava.  Welcome.

Team Tupulaga celebrated Samoan Language Week at Rosebank Primary School on Friday 31 May.

Children have been busy this week doing activities around this theme.  Tupulaga team organised activities for all classrooms to visit and participate.  In the hall was flax weaving and gluing patterns on mats.  Room 29 had Samoan ink patterning on paper.  We also learnt how to do Samoan slap dance taught by parent helpers.
